Household Hazardous Waste

LEVEL OF SERVICE PROVIDED:

RCSWD is proud to to be able provide the highest level of service in Vermont.  The State of Vermont requires that RCSWD do only two (2) 4 hour day events per year.  At this time we provide HHW services for 312 days per year (Monday - Saturday 7:30am to 2:00pm). In addition, we provide 32 HHW Rover events to our member towns during the spring, summer and fall.

WHAT IS HAZARDOUS WASTE?

Hazardous waste includes any unused product that is poisonous, reactive, corrosive, or flammable. You can easily identify hazardous products by reading packaging labels. Look for key words such as "Warning!" "Danger!" "Poison!" "Caution!" Such products include certain paints, cleaners, stains and varnishes, car batteries, motor oil, and pesticides. Click here for a detailed list of what we accept as Hazardous Waste.

Some materials are free to all, as they are covered by Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws.

There are two options for disposing of hazardous waste produced in-home:

  1. Drop it off at our Regional Transfer Station HHW Depot on Gleason Road in Rutland. Household Hazardous Waste is available to dispose of by any RCSWD in district residential permit holders by APPOINTMENT ONLY! Click Here To Make Your Appointment
  2. Take it to one of the scheduled Rural HHW collection events at your local transfer station throughout the year.
  3. Household batteries, computers, computer peripherals, T.V.'s can be accepted without an appointment at the recycling center.

WHY IS PROPER DISPOSAL NECESSARY?

Keeping hazardous waste out of the landfill, wastewater and surrounding ecosystems is a priority of Solid Waste Management Entities. Chemicals in certain products will cause damage to the organisms that live in the area, which includes humans. Keeping hazardous wastes separated and controlled requires some effort, but is mandatory by law, as well as the right thing to do in consideration of the environment and each other.

Paint, Batteries, Pesticides, Thermostats, and Pharmaceuticals are some common hazardous wastes. See why and where to dispose of them properly.

View the Hazardous Waste disposal prices for businesses and non-district residents.  In an effort to off-set steadily increasing cost, non-district customers will be charged $5.00 for each visit. (excludes EPR exclusive visits)  See the complete price list.

Hazardous waste produced by commercial entities, such as automobile shops, is often too much for our facilities to handle, and must be permitted through the VT Department of Environmental Conservation. Small businesses that don't produce much hazardous waste may be Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generators (CESQGs), and can dispose of products in the same manner as residents (see above). To find out if your business is exempt from permitting, visit this page: CESQG.

Commercial/ Conditionally Exempt Generators (CEG) businesses must call Breanna Franzoni at 802-775-7209 ext. 203 or email at programs@rcswd.com prior to making an appointment. Please bring current SDS sheets. Commercial customers usually need more information, due to State regulatory requirements, or higher volumes of more hazardous materials.
