Commercial Recycling

The District has owned the former VICON incinerator plant off West Street in Rutland since 1995. Upon acquisition, the District converted the facility into a general purpose Material Recovery (Recycling) Facility, or MRF.

From 1996 until mid 2001, the MRF was jointly managed by the District and Casella Waste Management. Since then Casella has operated the facility under contract with the District.

The District continues to own the building and most of the recycling equipment.

The MRF receives and processes the following commodities for sale and remanufacturing:

• Newspaper with inserts • Magazines • Boxboard
• White ledger • Sorted mixed office waste • Glass: brown, clear, green
• Tin / bi-metal • Aluminum • Cardboard
• Aluminum beverage containers • Printers’ waste • High grade paper
• Plastic #1 – #7

The MRF is not open to residential recyclers, but does take material from town transfer stations, commercial waste haulers and large commercial generators.

Operating hours are 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday.

Guided tours for school or other groups can be arranged by calling the District at (802) 775-7209 for further info.
